Happy 4th of July: Questions for my Readers

This in an invitation for all of my readers to get to know each other. If you have a blog or website, you can post the answers there and leave a link in my comments or if you don't you can just post your answers in the comments.

3. What are your top 10 most visited websites?

4. What is your favorite/most bizarre/interesting fact about something in history?

5. If you could wake up tomorrow and have acquired a new skill in your sleep, what would it be and why?

7. What are your internet pet-peeves?

  1. Great idea! I'll have to do this list myself and post it on my blog. :) Happy Independence Day, Stephanie! Hope you have a good time!

  2. 1. When I blogged, I think my emphasis on loving aspects of city life was very limited. Most of my hobbies I currently get to explore are in a more country setting, but I do love gorgeous cities. And my interest in long hair. Though, most people who know me in real life are aware of it. I also love Bollywood movies!

    2. Not sure on this one.

    3. Facebook, verizon email, Mint, The Long Hair Community, YouTube, A Private Forum, and that is about it. I read a few blogs regularly but most other stuff is just researching and browsing.

    4. Hummm. I'm not sure about favorite, but I think a most bizzare aspect of history:modern times is how many things used to be taken as normal and are now considered unsafe-yet are perfectly safe, arguably more safe than modern practices. Home births for example. And drinking raw milk instead of pasteurized, homogenized milk.

    5. To dance. I love dancing. Sadly, with working and starting dance so late in life, I have very little time to explore it or build my skill level. I'd love to know all the ball room dances, swing dance, many historical dance types.

    6. I would choose the mid-late 1800's. Specifically the opening of the west.

    7. How hard it is to get unbiased news. It bugs me that my internet viewing history skews the news headlines which I'm shown.

    8. Beekeeping. I'm wanting to build a couple bee hives this fall/winter and start beekeeping next spring! I've wanted bees for ages, for various reasons. Local honey is good for allergies and such, plus honey is a more healthful sweetener than cane sugar. The bee population is suffering a LOT all across the country due to modern farming practices, and I want to play my part in keeping it healthy.

    9. Pricilla from the Bible. I would love to know what her take on the early church work was as a traveling wife and leader. Queen Victoria. She fascinates me. Patrick Henry. His political ideals inspire me, and his passion in sharing them... I would love to hear him speak.

    10. I really don't know! I haven't ever considered this.

    1. I love Bollywood too!

I really agree with 7. I almost never listen to the news until a few weeks after the fact when most of the real story is straightened out. However, it makes me very uninformed in the meantime.

  3. 1. I used to be a punk rocker. Yes, it's true. Circle Jerks, Dead Kennedy's, The Clash, The Sex Pistols. What set me apart from the other punk rockers was that I still loved all of my other music as well.

    2. I never in my wildest dreams ever thought there were so many living historians out there.

    3. (not in any order) Amazon.com, facebook, National Weather Service, youtube, 21st Michigan reenactors, various blog friends (lumped together), google news, The official Greenfield Village site, Ebay, U.S. 12 Hertiage Trail

    4. This one's a tuffy...I believe I will go along the lines as the above commenter and write that it's sad that all of the modern revisionists are teaching theories and PC as historical fact. And the lemmings blindly follow because they're too lazy (or afraid) to do their own research.

    5. To do carpentry. I would love to be able to replicate period furniture.

    6. 1859: just before the Civil War. I love that time period and would enjoy it even more without the war.

    7. Trolls that only want to argue and get your goat. Also, people that are so big and tough and oh-so-smart behind the computer, but when they are challenged to a face-to-face debate they become the cowards they really are.

    8. Newest? I don't really have anything new that you haven't seen on my own blog (Passion for the Past) but I am garnering an interest in taking real tintype photographs with an actual tintype camera. It's really expensive, though, and right now that is an impossibility financially.

    9. a) Jesus Christ: I would enjoy speaking to Him one on one and to ask him his opinion of society. Everyone on both sides of the fence seems to know what He would think. I'd like to hear what He Himself has to say
    b) My dad: I would like him to meet my wife and for him to see my four kids
    c) My 3rd great grandparents, William and Mary Raby, so I can hear 1st hand about everyday life in the early-to-mid-19th century.

    10. Bob Cratchit from the various "A Christmas Carol" movies based on the Dickens story. He was such an easy going guy who placed Jesus and family at the top of his list. And because of that life was good, especially after Scrooge's reformation.

I don't know if this is what you were looking for but I did try to be as honest as I could.
    Have a great day!

    1. I can see the punk thing. I've always tended to be on the more alternative side of music, myself. :)

      I love your # 10!

  4. 1. I would have to say languages. They're fun to study for me. I think if I had time and money to spend learning I'd probably speak about 20. :)

    2. Your research and blog have taught me a ton of things I didn't know.

    3. aol.com, http://forums.chiffandfipple.com/, http://www.sylloge.com/5k/entries/162/ (universal decision maker), netflix.com, facebook.com . I wouldn't say I visit many more very frequently.
    4. What is your favorite/most bizarre/interesting fact about something in history?

    5. Well, two things I'd love to be able to do is to make either violins or uilleann pipes. If I could acquire either of those skills overnight I'd take either. :)

    6. This is a tough question. As much as I like to visit other time periods, I think I'd miss the stuff I have now. I think I'd probably like to see a fleet of ships of the line sailing along. That'd be neat.

    7. Just people who are rude because they figure they'll never meet you in real life so it doesn't matter.

    8. I got a new camera. I'm learning how to use it. It's fun. :)

    9. I'd probably invite my grandfather. He and I were really close when I was little, and I often wonder what he'd think of me now. I'd kind of like to know, and ask his advice on life.

    10. This is a play but there's a movie version so I think it counts. I think John Adams from 1776. I relate to him a lot at work lately. The songs he sings are pretty fun, too.

  5. 1. I like to dance (Raqs Sharqi) and I am not a terrible artist.

    2. Homesteading. I had always wanted to do something similar but I didn’t know it had a name or that there was an internet network of people interested in being self-sufficient.

    3. Blogger, Aol mail (but I always get sidetracked by those dumb teaser news headlines,) facebook (only to chat,) Amazon, Playlist.com (I am constantly on this one.) Can’t think of many more that I regularly go to.

    4. I like that people aren’t very different. They may have lived differently but we aren’t all that different. I always have to remind people that people of the past were not dumb and were in some cases a little more creative with the materials they did have.

    5. Speaking a foreign language. It’s the one thing that is really difficult for me to learn. I study so much and remember so little. I can do decently well with basics but changing tenses and long words just swirl around in my brain.

    6. 1762. A lot of reenacting is based around wars but I would like to see how “regular” life was. I’d really like to see the differences in lifestyle for an average woman. I’d really like to see how people related to each other.

    7. “Teaser Headlines.” I hate headlines that purposefully misconstrue a story. I also don’t like when grown people argue like children or fight about things that everyone knows has already been beaten to death. I’ve also been dreading the sameness of everything. Everything is viral these days and practically everything is old news.

    8. Photography. I have always liked it but now I’m getting more serious about actually learning. I’m no longer a point and shoot kind of girl (although sometimes I’d like to be.) You’d be amazed at the work your digital camera is doing if you had to adjust all of those automatic settings yourself. :D

    9. Mark Twain, Jane Austen, and Banjamin Franklin. Who would get to drive Jane home? :)

    10. Anne Shirley from the 1980s version of Anne of Green Gables. I don’t ever recall seeing the movies (1 and 2) until I was older but I loved the books as a kid. She gets to shoot many scenes that look fun to shoot, like falling in the mud or sinking in the river as Elaine.

    1. Hmm, I'm imagining Mark Twain and Franklin competing over her attentions. ;)

  6. For some reason I had bizarre HTML formatting problems when writing out my responses on my own page, and it won't let me paste the full text here. But I eventually got the blog post to not look like a page-long run-on sentence, so I will link it here: http://companyqdispatches.blogspot.com/2012/07/1776-pageviews.html
